08-30-2002:  The Friday Morning Listen

Past Lives - Black Sabbath

from the "glory" days of Sabbath. kinda good to hear Ozzy not slurring his words.

08-29-2002:  Exactly
wish i had written this:

I'll always be a Texan and I'll always be an American. I may not always live in the U.S., but I'll always be an American. The government can't decide whether I'm an American or not.

08-28-2002:  Is Alice There?
this memory always makes me a little sad. maybe because i hope i never get like this.

there was a time back when i was in high school...every so often, say, maybe once a week or so, this elderly lady would call our house. she would always ask for her friend alice. and every time i had to tell her that she had the wrong number. the thing is, she didn't seem to know what alice's number actually was. i never did figure out why she called our number...because i looked up alice in the phone book after asking our mystery caller what her last name was: and the number was nothing like ours.

the last time she called i again told her what alice's number was. "oh, ok..thank you". then there's a short pause... and she starts dialing the number without hanging up. i politely tell her that she needs to hang up first.

"oh, ok...thank you".

08-26-2002:  Politics? No Thank You
for some reason i was hopefull that the nature of american politics would change in the aftermath of sept. 11. it just goes to show you how fricken' nieve i am.

the current spate of compaign ads running in southern new hampshire shows just how little has changed.

the republicans are piling on to show who's the true conservative, who hates high taxes more, and who's morally superior to the evil liberals.

meanwhile, the democrats (i think there's at least one running for something...) sit back and allow themselves to be tarred and feathered. it's business as usual.

screw all of them.

08-22-2002:  Lone Shoe
it's so odd when you're driving along and notice a shoe, a single shoe, laying on the side of the road.

ever wonder how that thing got there? i mean, i've never personally lost a shoe while driving down the interstate.

08-20-2002:  My First BlogCritics Article
"A sinister cabal of the web's best writers on music, books and popular culture miscellanea...."

here's my rant inspired by listening to The Kinks' "Around The Dial".
08-19-2002:  You Light Up My Life (file under: herniated over-emoting)
Whitney Houston is going to remake Debbie Boone's You Light Up My Life.

i can hardly wait.
08-16-2002:  Latest Guilty Pleasure
Andrew W.K. - I Get Wet

ok, the title is stupid. the song titles are stupid: It's Time To Party,Party Hard,Party Til You Puke.

but for some reason it's a load of fun to listen to what sounds like an endless Cheap Trick/Meatloaf chorus.

Give The People What They Want - The Kinks

people used to have favorite dj's? gees, what a concept.

08-15-2002:  Walmart and Linux?!
one of my peaves about the general state of major media reportage related to linux is that it is always portrayed as the hackers o/s. certainly there's some truth to this. on the other hand, it will always remain that way if people, 'regular' people, are never given a chance to play with it. i mean, just try to go to any of the big pc websites (dell, etc) and see how easy it is to get a computer with linux preinstalled. it's not.

so then i stumble across the fact that walmart is offering pc's preloaded with either lindows, mandrake linux, or (somewhat shockingly)no o/s at all.

linux and walmart may look like strange bedfellows but a retail organization with that kind of muscle must make microsoft shudder...maybe just a little.

plus, the title is great: "Windows Alternative OS on Microtel PCs". what? there's actually an alternative to microsoft?!!
08-12-2002:  Lyrical
i've never written a novel. but i'am absolutely certain of one thing: if i do write one, it must be lyrical.

if you spend about five minutes in a bookstore scanning the blurb-o-mania on random fiction dustjackets, the word you will see most often is lyrical. also...luminous. ya, that's a good one too. but still, lyrical is the king of the book review adjectives. it's used so often that it kinda looses its meaning.

can't they just say slow or ponderous?

oh, i forget...lyrical is a good thing. oops.
08-09-2002:  The Friday Morning Listen
Mello Gold - Beck

i'm a loser baby.....
08-08-2002:  The Sharks Are Circling

(and they appear to have their eyes on each other)

From the AP:

EMI Group filed suit against AOL Time Warner Wednesday, claiming the world's largest media company has been playing songs on its Turner Broadcasting network and America Online Internet service without paying for them.

08-07-2002:  My Brush With Celebrity
ok, not really. but i did get an email from Janis Ian yesterday.

her article on the internet debacle was very inspiring.
08-06-2002:  Happy Birthday Andy Warhol
ok, i never really loved andy warhol all that much.

what attracted me to him was that his art used to piss people off ("...that's not art!!").

people need a good shakin' up every now and then.
